Demeter

taught agriculture and law to the Greeks. When her daughter was taken to the underworld, Demeter afflicted the land, allowing nothing to grow until the gods relented.

Half the year Persephone would return home, spring and summer would reflect their joy. In fall and winter the underworld claims Persephone and all growing things die.

Thus Demeter symbolizes abundance, sorrow and a mother's love.
